Indiana—Hoosier Shrimp Farm

According to Jason Troike, owner Hoosier Shrimp Farm, located in Walkerton, Indiana, there are 20 shrimp farms in the United States, and 11 of them are in Indiana.  Why Indiana?  Part of the reason seems to be the innovative aquaculture programs at Purdue University and businesses like RDM Aquaculture in Fowler, Indiana, that help new shrimp farms get started.

Hoosier’s saltwater tanks, actually modified swimming pools, are located in a large metal shed.  Like most indoor operations, Hoosier uses a zero-exchange, biofloc system.  Populations of beneficial bacteria metabolize the shrimp waste and help prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms.  No antibiotics or hormones are used.

Troike is harvesting his first crop of shrimp, but already he is talking about one day growing oysters in the same tanks.  Shrimp are harvested after the order is placed and then sold live on ice.
