Massachusetts—Sky8’s First Harvest, Video

Six months after starting Sky8 Shrimp Farm, an indoor tank farm that recirculates its water, James Tran has harvested about 500 pounds of Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).  Tran turned down national buyers, Legal Sea Foods and Whole Foods, because they wanted an exclusive on his shrimp.  “I have a limited supply, and I wanted to go to the end user,” said Tran.  He sold the bulk of the shrimp to two upscale restaurants, Ten Tables in Provincetown and Erbaluce in Boston.  He said he hopes that by September 2013, he will have a steady supply of shrimp growing in the warm-water tanks inside his building in Stoughton.  His goal is to raise 70,000 pounds of shrimp a year.  Both of Tran’s parents fished for shrimp in Vietnam.
