Minnesota—Dr. Addison Lawrence Retires as trū Shrimp Systems
Chief Technical Officer

On March 14, 2016, trū Shrimp™ Systems announced that Chief Technical Officer, Professor Emeritus Addison Lawrence, has retired.

Professor Lawrence played a pivotal role in developing and constructing a new, state-of-the-art shrimp research facility and pilot demonstration plant at the Ralco Technology Campus in Balaton, Minnesota.  The facility was created to commercialize the technology that was developed at the Mariculture Laboratory for Shrimp Research at Texas A&M University in Port Aransas, Texas.

Professor Lawrence said, “I am very pleased with the work that is being done at the trū Shrimp™ Systems shrimp research facility in Minnesota.  The research facility in Minnesota and the people working there are taking intensive shrimp production to large, commercial scale which has always been the purpose of my work and a lifelong dream of mine.”

The fully-staffed trū Shrimp™ Systems research facility is operating at capacity and includes 144 clear-water primary research tanks, 36 biofloc primary research tanks, 16 nursery tanks as well as animal health, water quality and shrimp feed laboratories. The research center also contains two commercial scale Tidal Basin™ lines, formerly referred to as super-intensive raceways.

trū Shrimp™ Systems’ General Manager Michael Ziebell, said, “Professor Lawrence has been instrumental to the development of our research facility and inspirational for the scale up of the patented technology we acquired from Texas A&M University.  It goes without saying we are very grateful for his contributions and friendship.  We wish him a comfortable and deserved retirement,”

In January 2015 Texas A&M University licensed its patent for Tidal Basin™ shrimp production for the United States of America market to trū Shrimp™ Systems.  Professor Lawrence developed the technology covered under the patent contending that it can produce 1,000,000 pounds of shrimp/acre footprint of water annually.  trū Shrimp™ Systems under his inspiration now has moved that past 1.5 million pounds per acre footprint and growing.  In April 2015 trū Shrimp™ Systems acquired the license to additional countries China, Taiwan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

trū Shrimp™ Systems is a brand of Ralco, a third-generation family owned multinational company with distribution in more than 20 countries.  Ralco is a leading global supplier of livestock nutrition, animal health products and crop enhancement technologies that support large segments of the livestock, poultry, aquaculture and crop production industries.

Professor Lawrence, retired from Texas A&M University System in 2015 after 36 years as a Regent Fellow, Senior Faculty Fellow, Project Leader and Scientist in Charge for Texas A&M Agrilife Research, and as a member of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Intercollegiate Faculty of Nutrition and Marine Biology Interdisciplinary Program Faculty.
