Response to Don Berger’s Shrimp Price Prediction

Russ Allen (shrimpone@aol.com), in response to an item on The Shrimp List that predicted that retail prices for large shrimp would have to drop to $4.99 a pound before demand picked up again, reports:

Inventories are high in the USA, and prices are coming down.  But large shrimp for $4.99 a pound will NEVER happen again!  I have my own market, I sell directly to consumers.  All you have to do is look at the price of beef, especially hamburger, at $5.00 a pound.  Is shrimp going to sell for less than that?  No way!  To the average USA consumer, shrimp is still a luxury item.  Until that perception changes, retail prices will remain relatively high.  In my opinion, the day of any shrimp selling for  $4.00 a pound is history.
