Texas—Proceedings of Biofloc Workshop

Tzachi Samocha ( reports: At the World Aquaculture Society’s meeting in Seattle, Washington, USA, in February 2014, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sponsored a free, half-day workshop on biofloc shrimp farming.   It was coordinated by Granvil Treece and me and moderated by Peter Woods and described the design, operation and commercial aspects of the Texas AgriLife Research super-intensive indoor shrimp biofloc system.  It included presentations by Dr. Terry Hanson of Auburn University on the economics of biofloc shrimp farming; Dr. John Leffler of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources on heavy metal and ionic changes in biofloc dominated systems; and Tim Morris of Bowers Shrimp Farm, Palacios, Texas, USA, on results from an indoor 1,250 m2 nursery system used on a commercial farm.  The slide presentations can be viewed at the Texas Aquaculture Association (TAA) web site: We are currently preparing a “how-to” manual on our biofloc system.

At the TAA website, my presentation had more than 62,600 hits since it was posted in February 2014.  All of the biofloc presentations received a total of 118,683 hits from February to May 2014.
