United Arab Emirates

Abu Dhabi— Al Jaraf Fisheries

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a federation of seven principalities along the west side of the Persian Gulf, there is a huge demand for shrimp, mostly supplied by imports from Saudi Arabia, Oman, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

There are several small shrimp farms in the UAE that cater to the private demand of their owners, says Dr. S.D. Gopakaumar of Al Jaraf Fisheries LLC, which operates an 84–hectare shrimp farm on Barmid Island that services the commercial shrimp market.  The farm, which got started in 2007, produces over two metric tons of shrimp and 100 kilograms of finfish (sea bream) daily.  It also produces some fresh water ornamental fish.

“Most of our produce is consumed in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.  Shrimp of different sizes from 15 grams to 50 grams are produced and delivered live and fresh to our customers,” says Gopakaumar.
