Farmed Shrimp Statistics for 2014

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reveal that shrimp exports are expected to be worth a record of $4 billion in 2014, up 25% over 2013.

Production of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) has continued to increase sharply, and by the end of 2014, white shrimp production will nearly doubled that of giant tiger shrimp (P. monodon).

The United States, Japan and the European Union are the major markets for Vietnam’s shrimp, while markets in South Korea, Australia and Canada witnessed double-digit growth in 2014.

At the beginning of 2015, Vietnam expects to sign a free trade agreement with the European Union, which will eliminate tariffs on its shrimp exports.

In 2014, Vietnam had 685,000 hectares of shrimp ponds, 590,000 hectares of them producing tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and 95,000 hectares producing white shrimp (P. vannamei).
