WWF and Quoc Viet Support Responsible Shrimp Farming in Ca Mau Province

On September 4, 2015, in cooperation with Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)–Vietnam signed a contract that will promote responsible shrimp farming and trade between Quoc Viet Co., Ltd., one of Vietnam’s largest shrimp farmers, and the Doan Ket Shrimp Aquaculture Cooperative in Tan Duyet Commune, Dam Doi District.

The signing ceremony was the initial step for a responsible shrimp supply chain connecting farmers, producers and consumers.  This commitment illustrates the collaboration and support of small-scale shrimp farmers and a future of responsible shrimp production and trade.

Quoc Viet Co., Ltd., has committed to purchasing the small-scale farmers’ higher priced, sustainably produced shrimp.  “Quoc Viet Co., Ltd., commits to support and invest for the small-scale shrimp farmers in accordance with the farming contract articles for a long-term sustainable cooperation for responsible shrimp production in compliance with the ASC Certification standards and other international standards, which express their socio-environmental responsibilities”, said Ngo Quoc Tuan, Vice President of Quoc Viet, Co., Ltd., at the ceremony.

In the closing session, relevant participants co-signed the contracts with 43 members of the Doan Ket Cooperative, which has a total of 107 hectares of farming areas with production capacity of approximately 200 tons of shrimp a year.

In the future, farming contracts and practices will be monitored on a regular basis and the information will be shared in order to implement similar production process in and around Vietnam.
