Dead Shrimp Blues

Thanks to Bill Hoenig and Scott Horton for the link to the song Dead Shrimp Blues.

Cumulatively, shrimp farmers have probably killed trillions of shrimp over the decades, so you all know that sickening feeling when you discover a pond of dead shrimp.

I even had to kill a few shrimp recently.  At a local Asian market, I purchased a little over a pound of live spot prawns ($40, gulp!), a big (up to ten inches), deep-water marine shrimp (Pandalus platyceros) that’s trap/fished off the west coast of the United States.

They were scooped out of a tank and placed in a plastic bag with just a trickle of water.  I took them home, put them in the refrigerator, and the next day, when I dumped them into my sink, they were still alive and kicking.  I got a bit of the “blues” when I dropped them one by one into a pot of boiling water.
