China—Sino Agro Foods/Tri-Way Industries

Sino Agro Food, Inc., (SIAF) produces, distributes, markets and sells sustainable seafood and beef to the rapidly growing middle class in the People’s Republic of China.  It also produces organic fertilizer and animal feed—and is a global leader in developing recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).  With its partners, it’s the world’s largest producer of freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in recirculating systems.

SIAF recently spun-off its “mega” freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) farm and other aquaculture operations as an independent Hong Kong-based corporation called “Tri-way Industries, Ltd.”  Sino will retain a 36% ownership position in Tri-way, which has an assessed value of $340.6 million.

SIAF’s aquaculture operations have the ability to grow a variety of seafood species, not just prawns.  Through the first nine months of 2016, for example, Aquafarm-3 (AF3, more below) produced 321 metric tons of sleepy cod, 265 tons of giant mottled eel, 6,569 tons of finfish and 1,844 tons of prawns, generating revenues of $57.5 million and a profit of $13.1 million.

On Tri-Way Industries and Aquafarm 3

Aquafarm 3 (AF3) consistently produces Giant River Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) juveniles from the 5,000 broodstock imported from Southeast Asian countries.

AF3’s hatchery also produces Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and tiger shrimp (P. monodon) postlarvae (PLs).  With production of over 2 billion postlarvae a year, it’s the primary shrimp hatchery for the MegaFarm project.  It plans to increase production to 5 billion PLs a year.

AF3’s main property is located on about 25 acres in San Jiao Town, Zhongshan City, People’s Republic of China.

In addition to serving the MegaFarm and other in-house needs, Aquafarm 3 is positioned to profit from an estimated market of 5 billion M. rosenbergii postlarvae in the Zhongshan area.  Currently, prices for PLs exceed $100 for 10,000 PL 6-8s.  Prices for Penaeus vannamei and P. monodon PLs are closer to $20 to $30 for 10,000.

AF3’s Longze shrimp hatchery is part of an uncommon fraternity of long-standing hatcheries in China; the manager/owner has more than 25 years’ experience and success in shrimp hatchery management.

SIAF has a long-term breeding program for its prawns and shrimp, aimed at developing lines specifically bred for its indoor and outdoor systems.
